Step 2: More Moisturizer: Putting Back What
Winter Takes Out
Because the
winter weather robs your skin of water, it is absolutely essential to keep
putting more moisture into your skin. The best time to moisturize is straight
after a bath or a shower when your skin is still damp.
Limit your
showers to about five minutes or less, and while it is tempting, don't make the
water too hot during the winter. Hot water and soap don't only remove dirt;
they also get rid of natural and essential oils from your skin so it's best to
avoid having lengthy showers and baths on a regular basis.
By applying a
moisturizer after your bath or shower, you will trap any excess moisture that
still remains on your skin after your shower or bath. It is best to moisturize
twice a day so if you shower in the morning you should also moisturize at night
before bed, or vice versa.

The Heritage
Healers moisturizers feel great on the skin and deliver results. To avoid dry
winter skin I recommend their ‘MERIDIAN MOUSTURIZING CREAM' or their ‘CHAKRA
NOURISHING CREAM'.
Don't forget to
moisturize your lips though. Wax-based products like lipstick and lip balm
provide moisture and wind protection
Step 3: Drink Up So You Don't Dry Up!
Water: Unlike frogs, our skin gets most of
its moisture from the inside, not from the outside. This means that there is no
better way to moisturize the deeper layers of our skin than by drinking a lot
of water. Water really is the essence of life. To avoid ‘thirsty skin' try and
drink at least 1.5 litres of water DAILY. Water has a ‘plumping' effect and
will give your skin a smoother, more even texture, as well as will flush
unwanted toxins out of your system.
Pamper Yourself to Warm Your Winter Months
It is
especially important to pamper your skin when it is dry and dull, making
wintertime the perfect occasion for a facial. At my salon we specialize in
delivering oxygen therapy facials which relax, exfoliate, cleanse, hydrate and
oxygenate the skin. Oxygen facials deliver fresh, youthful and smooth skin all
year round.
Whilst a daily
visit to the salon is every woman's dream, this isn't always possible. You can
make sure though that you skin doesn't suffer between treatments simply by
following my simple steps to radiant and healthy skin.
Step 1: Mix up your summer beauty routine:
Cleanse to clean but keep the sheen:
As I explained
in my previous blog, the winter weather causes our skin to dry out. You will
need to change your beauty routine from the summer months to accommodate for
the change in weather.
Whilst
cleansing is very important, you shouldn't cleanse twice a day in winter as the
soaps will remove essential nutrients and oils from your skin.
To avoid
dryness in winter you should cleanse your skin just once a day, preferably at
night to remove any dirt and impurities as well as makeup. Then in the morning
just rinse your skin with water. Be mindful that alcohol dries out the skin, so
in the winter try to avoid using products that are alcohol based such as strong
toners
Out with the old and in with the new: Exfoliate
to remove dead skin cells
Skin regenerates on a monthly cycle, and in
this time it sheds any dead or flattened cells that accumulate on the surface
in order to make room for the new, healthy skin cells to take its place. If the
dead cells don't shed as fast as they should then a thick dry, skin can form.
To avoid this risk simply exfoliate weekly. Winter encourages the drying out of
skin cells, and this simple routine of exfoliating will help to remove dead
skin cells before they can build up.

Heritage Healers has avariety of great cleansers. For something softer for winter try
the ‘BALANCING CLEANSER' or their ‘TANTRA CLEANSING FOAM'. When exfoliating, I
recommend the Heritage Healers ‘WATTLE HUSK PEEL' followed by their
‘REVITALISER MASK' to restore any essential oils and minerals taken off by the
exfoliating peel.
I am never
surprised when the winter months roll around and I start to hear more and more
of my clients complaining of dry skin. Whilst a treatment at my salon can help
to reverse the effects of the cold weather, I also like to recommend some tips
to my clients to help them keep their skin moist and youthful in between
visits. In this three-part blog I will explain how and why our skin dries out
in the wintertime, as well as the best ways to maintain healthy and glowing
skin between visits to the salon.
What weathers
our beautiful ‘summer' skin?
The winter
weather does indeed cause dry skin, but the ways to prevent this seem logical
once you understand exactly what causes our skin and lips to lose their moisture.
During long and
cold winters the moisture level in the air drops substantially. As a result of
this, the moisture in our skins surface is drawn out into the atmosphere in a
process called ‘osmosis'. Simply, osmosis means that water has a tendency to
travel from a ‘wetter' source to ‘drier' areas. This is why it is important to
constantly replenish your skin and body with liquids and moisturisers.
In the next of
the ‘survival guide series' I will reveal the best ways to save your skin from
the winter blues.
